2014 Director’s Community Leadership Awards

The Miami Division honors Mr. Alberto M. Carvalho for his work serving Miami-area children and their families. Mr. Carvalho is the superintendent of Miami Dade County Public Schools, the nation’s fourth largest school system. He has successfully elevated his school district’s academic profile and streamlined its business and financial systems in an effort to better serve children throughout Miami Dade County. Mr. Carvalho’s efforts have produced several initiatives, such as tutoring and environmental research, that have significantly enriched the academic experience for local students. The Success Academy Tutoring Initiative was created to help students in struggling schools prepare for state exams. Students also learn about the importance of money management and receive incentives for their participation. The Terra Environmental Research Institute has partnered with the school district and the Discovery Channel to educate students about their local environment. Through his leadership, Miami Dade County Public Schools has established 52 new choice and magnet programs, including AP/Capstone, Cambridge, Science, Mathematics, Information Technology, and the Arts. In 2014, Mr. Carvalho was honored as National Superintendent of the Year. |
