2012 Director’s Community Leadership Awards
Newark | Frank Biviano |
The Newark Division is pleased to honor Frank Biviano, a citizen determined to help stop crimes associated with the pharmaceutical industry, as a recipient of the 2012 Director’s Community Leadership Award. For more than a decade, Mr. Biviano, an employee of Bristol-Myers Squibb and a former state investigator, has helped to secure the FBI’s partnership with the pharmaceutical industry and has enhanced the FBI’s efforts to combat the influx of stolen, diverted, outdated, misbranded, unapproved, counterfeit, and otherwise degraded prescription medications. In 2002, while attending a meeting between the FBI and pharmaceutical industry representatives, Mr. Biviano emerged as a leader, encouraging collaboration, teamwork, and partnerships between FBI Newark and industry. The subsequent commitment of resources and services by Mr. Biviano and other parties helped support two FBI investigations that addressed theft, diversion, counterfeiting, and fraud associated with prescription medicines. To date, more than 20 major criminal networks have been disrupted and dismantled, more than 80 criminals have been arrested, and prescription medicines valued in the hundreds of millions of dollars have been recovered. Most notably, Mr. Biviano helped uncover an illicit market in prescription medicines. The drugs, used to treat ailments ranging from acid reflux to cancer, are manufactured by 28 major drug companies. |
