The Houston Division is pleased to honor the 100 Club of Houston as a recipient of the 2012 Director’s Community Leadership Award. The 100 Club of Houston began in 1953, when 100 men each gave $100 to be used to assist the families of Houston Police Department officers killed in the line of duty. Today, the organization also provides life-saving protective equipment and pays for training of law enforcement officers in Houston and surrounding areas. More than $37.4 million has been collected and dispersed in support of law enforcement. Of that, $14.2 million has gone to families of deceased law enforcement officers. The support includes assistance with funeral expenses, paying off an existing mortgage on the family home, or funding education costs for the deceased officer’s children. The remainder of the funds has been spent on bulletproof vests and other life-saving equipment for local law enforcement and on educational scholarships for active duty law enforcement. In 2012, the organization added firefighters as approved beneficiaries of support. |
