The 34th Annual Crime Laboratory Development Symposium: Organizational Communication

Anja Einseln
Training Officer
Quality Assurance and Training Unit
FBI Laboratory
Quantico, Virginia

The FBI Laboratory is pleased to announce the 34th Annual Crime Laboratory Development Symposium, to be held May 8–11, 2006, in Atlanta, Georgia. This year’s theme is Organizational Communication. The Laboratory is partnering with the Georgia Tech College of Management and the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota. This collaboration combines the experience of a proven partnership with a unique faculty and curriculum.

Thoughtful selection of attendees is required to provide a valuable learning experience for all. Although the symposium will include instruction appropriate for the entire range of management skill and experience levels, attendees must be willing to engage with the program faculty. Indeed, the symposium should not be considered a passive learning process, but one that requires engagement from each attendee so that members of the forensic management community can learn from one another. The management and leadership ideas presented in this program should be seen as a skill set that attendees should incorporate into their management and leadership roles, not as an individualized prescription to cure the ills of the forensic community. By attending the program with this in mind, attendees create a more useful learning environment via peer conversations, program exercises, and involvement with faculty. This topic is further examined in the article Leadership and Management Training for Forensic Laboratory Directors and Managers.

As part of the symposium, the FBI Laboratory will provide attendees the following items at no cost: symposium content and supporting materials; transportation to the symposium city; lodging for May 7–11, 2006; breakfast, lunch, and breaks during the symposium; and one banquet dinner. Detailed information will be provided in the March 1 registration packet. Substitutions will be considered on an individual basis. The Laboratory expects a high level of interest and reserves the right to offer a vacated position to the next applicant on the waiting list.

To register, complete the attached nomination form, and fax it to the number provided on the form. The deadline for submissions is February 1, 2006. Selected applicants will be mailed registration packets on or before March 1, 2006. Questions regarding this program should be directed to Anja Einseln, Training Officer, FBI Laboratory, + 1-703-632-8292 or anja.einseln@ic.fbi.gov.
