Genocide and war crimes are a continuing tragic reality for our world and an investigative priority for the FBI.

The FBI, through its Genocide War Crimes Program, plays a vital role in the U.S. government’s response to incidents of genocide, war crimes, and other related mass atrocities—whether investigating along with our federal partners or providing assistance to our international partners.

In Pursuit of…Joseph Kony

In 2005, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Joseph Kony—head of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA)—and four other LRA leaders for crimes against humanity and war crimes. In 2010, the U.S. enacted into law the Lord’s Resistance Disarmament and Northern Uganda Recovery Act, which reaffirmed U.S. commitment to support our nation’s regional partners’ efforts to end the atrocities in central Africa. Key objectives of the U.S. commitment include increased protection of civilians, continued humanitarian relief, and—where the FBI’s Genocide War Crimes Program plays a supportive role—the apprehension of Kony and other senior LRA commanders.
