There were 1,003 officers with the DHS who were assaulted in 2010. Of these officers, 1 officer was killed and 144 officers sustained injuries. The following provides information by agency within the DHS:

  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection–988 officers were assaulted, including 1 officer who was killed with a firearm, 4 officers who were injured during assaults with firearms, and 137 officers who suffered injuries inflicted by weapons other than firearms. 
  • U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement–3 officers were assaulted, and 2 of those officers were injured with weapons other than firearms. 
  • U.S. Secret Service–12 officers were assaulted; 1 of whom was injured with a weapon other than a firearm. 

Type of activity

At the time they were attacked, officers from the DHS were performing the following activities:

  • 891 officers were assigned to patrol or guard duty. 
  • 9 were conducting investigations/searches. 
  • 5 were maintaining custody of prisoners. 
  • 5 were assigned to office duty. 
  • 1 officer was making an arrest or serving a summons. 
  • 92 officers were assigned to other duties at the times of the attacks. 

Weapons

Weapons that were used against the 1,003 DHS officers during the attacks include the following:

  • 36 officers were attacked with firearms. 
  • 34 officers were attacked with vehicles. 
  • 13 officers were attacked with personal weapons, such as hands, fists, or feet. 
  • 5 officers were attacked with knives or other cutting instruments. 
  • 4 of the officers suffered attacks with blunt instruments. 
  • 911 of the officers were attacked with other types of dangerous weapons. 

Dispositional information

Law enforcement authorities identified 173 suspects in the assaults on DHS officers. At the time of this report, dispositional information was available for 12 of these assailants:

  • 8 suspects were awaiting trial. 
  • 2 suspects were found not guilty or the charges were dismissed. 
  • Prosecution was pending for 2 suspects.
