Within the DOI in 2012, 861 officers were assaulted. Of these officers, 1 officer was killed with a firearm, and 151 sustained injuries from weapons other than firearms. The following provides information by agency within the DOI:

  • Bureau of Indian Affairs–716 officers were assaulted, and 112 of these officers were injured with weapons other than firearms.
  • Bureau of Land Management–5 officers were assaulted, none were injured.
  • National Park Service–137 officers were assaulted, 1 of whom was killed with a firearm and 37 of whom sustained injuries from weapons other than firearms.
  • U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service–3 officers were assaulted, and 2 were injured with weapons other than firearms.

Type of activity

At the time of the attacks, officers from the DOI were performing the following activities:

  • 371 officers were making arrests or serving summonses.
  • 205 officers were conducting investigations or searches.
  • 191 officers were on patrol or guard duty.
  • 42 officers were maintaining custody of prisoners.
  • 21 officers were assigned to protection duty.
  • 2 officers were assigned to office duty.
  • 2 officers were on court duty.
  • 27 officers were performing other official duties.

Weapons

Weapons used against the DOI officers during the attacks include the following:

  • 273 officers were attacked with personal weapons, such as hands, fists, or feet.
  • 27 officers were attacked with vehicles.
  • 15 officers were attacked with blunt instruments.
  • 12 officers were attacked with firearms.
  • 11 officers were attacked with knives or other cutting instruments.
  • 1 officer was involved in a bomb-related incident.
  • 522 officers were attacked with other types of weapons.

Dispositional information

Law enforcement authorities identified 788 suspects in the assaults on DOI officers. At the time of this report, the following dispositional information was available for 663 of the suspects:

  • 470 suspects were found guilty.
  • 153 suspects were awaiting trial.
  • 17 suspects’ prosecutions were declined.
  • 13 suspects’ cases were pending prosecutive opinion.
  • 3 suspects were found not guilty or the charges were dismissed.
  • 3 suspects were fugitives.
  • 2 suspects were found incompetent to stand trial.
  • 2 suspects are deceased.
