There were 658 officers with the DHS who were assaulted in 2012. Of these, 20 officers sustained injuries. The following provides information by agency within the DHS:

  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection–607 officers were assaulted; 12 were injured with weapons other than firearms.
  • U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement–12 officers were assaulted. Of these, 5 officers were injured with firearms, and 1 was injured with an other type of weapon.
  • U.S. Secret Service–39 officers were assaulted; of these, 2 were injured with weapons other than firearms.

Type of activity

At the time they were attacked, officers from the DHS were performing the following activities:

  • 585 officers were assigned to patrol or guard duty.
  • 45 were conducting investigations/searches.
  • 8 officers were making arrests or serving summonses.
  • 3 officers were assigned to protection duty.
  • 2 were maintaining custody of prisoners.
  • 1 was assigned to office duty.
  • 14 officers were assigned to other duties at the times of the attacks.

Weapons

Weapons used against the DHS officers during the attacks include the following:

  • 262 officers were attacked with personal weapons, such as hands, fists, or feet.
  • 58 officers were attacked with vehicles.
  • 34 officers were attacked with firearms.
  • 18 of the officers were attacked with blunt instruments.
  • 15 officers were involved in bomb-related incidents.
  • 271 of the officers were attacked with other types of weapons.

Dispositional information

Law enforcement authorities identified 87 suspects in the assaults on DHS officers. Dispositional information was reported for 44 of the known offenders. At the time of this report:

  • 36 suspects were awaiting trial.
  • 3 suspects were found guilty of the charges.
  • 3 suspects are deceased.
  • 2 suspects’ prosecutions were declined.
