Within the DOI in 2011, 536 officers were assaulted.  Of these officers, 113 sustained injuries.  The following provides information by agency within the DOI:

  • Bureau of Indian Affairs–425 officers were assaulted, and 88 of these officers were injured.
  • Bureau of Land Management–7 officers were assaulted, but none were injured.
  • National Park Service–101 officers were assaulted, and 25 of these officers were injured.
  • U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service–3 officers were assaulted, but none were injured.

Type of activity

At the time of their attacks, officers from the DOI were performing the following activities:

  • 274 officers were making arrests or serving summonses.
  • 146 officers were on patrol or guard duty.
  • 38 officers were conducting investigations or searches.
  • 34 officers were maintaining custody of prisoners.
  • 8 officers were assigned to protection duty.
  • 6 officers were assigned to office duty.
  • 30 officers were performing other official duties.

Weapons

Weapons that were used against the DOI officers during the attacks include the following:

  • 186 officers were attacked with personal weapons, such as hands, fists, or feet.
  • 22 officers were attacked with vehicles.
  • 18 officers were attacked with firearms.
  • 9 officers were attacked with knives or other cutting instruments.
  • 6 officers were attacked with blunt instruments.
  • 295 officers were attacked with other types of dangerous weapons.

Dispositional information

Law enforcement authorities identified 483 suspects in the assaults on DOI officers.  At the time of this report, the following dispositional information was available for 369 of the suspects:

  • 217 offenders were found guilty.
  • 93 suspects were awaiting trial.
  • 24 suspects’ prosecutions were declined.
  • 17 suspects’ cases are pending prosecutive opinion.
  • 9 suspects were found not guilty or the charges were dismissed.
  • 4 offenders were found incompetent to stand trial.
  • 3 suspects were fugitives.
  • 2 offenders are deceased.
