Offenses Reported to Law Enforcement, by State by Cities 100,000 and over in population

The FBI collects these data through the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program.

General comment

This table provides the number of offenses known to law enforcement for the first 6 months of 2012 and 2013 in cities with populations of 100,000 and over.

Methodology

  • Data from law enforcement agencies whose resident population falls below 100,000 are published in this table for 2 consecutive years. After which, if the population remains below 100,000, the agency’s data are no longer published in this table.
  • When the FBI determines that an agency’s data collection methodology does not comply with the national UCR Program’s guidelines, the figure(s) for that agency’s offense(s) is not included in the table and the discrepancy is explained in a footnote.
  • The FBI does not publish arson data in this table unless the UCR Program receives data from the agency for the first 6 months of the year.
  • The 2012 forcible rape figures presented in this table are based on the historical definition of forcible rape. The 2013 rape figures are based on the historical and the new definitions. Agencies submitting rape data under the new definition are designated with a footnote, and their rape data are not comparable to previous years’ figures.

Population estimation

The FBI calculated the 2012 state growth rates using the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2011 decennial state/national population figures and 2012 provisional state/national population estimates. The FBI then estimated population figures for city jurisdictions by applying the 2012 state growth rate to the 2011 U.S. Census Bureau data.
