Crime in the United States, by Region, Geographic Division, and State, 2011–2012

  • In 2012, the estimated number of violent crimes in the United States increased 0.7 percent when compared with 2011 data.
  • In comparing the 2-year estimates, violent crimes decreased in two regions, with the largest decrease (1.2 percent) occurring in the Northeast, followed by a decline of 0.3 percent in the South. Violent crimes increased by 3.2 percent in the West and 1.5 percent in the Midwest.
  • The estimated number of murders decreased 3.1 percent in the Northeast, the only region to experience a decrease. The estimated number of murders increased 2.8 percent in the Midwest, 1.7 percent in the West, and 1.6 percent in the South.
  • The Midwest experienced a 1.4 percent increase in rape and the Northeast saw a 1.1 percent increase. The estimated number of rapes declined 0.7 percent in the West and 0.2 percent in the South.
  • The estimated number of robbery offenses increased by 4.6 percent in the West in 2012 when compared to the 2011 estimate. Robbery offenses declined 2.4 percent in the Midwest, 1.9 percent in the Northeast, and 0.8 percent in the South.
  • Estimated aggravated assault offenses increased 3.5 percent in the Midwest and 3.0 percent in the West. Aggravated assault offenses decreased 1.0 percent in the Northeast and 0.2 percent in the South.
  • For 2012, the estimated number of property crimes nationwide decreased 0.9 percent when compared with the 2011 estimate. 
  • The estimated number of property crimes declined 3.3 percent in the South, 1.9 percent in the Midwest, and 1.7 percent in the Northeast. The estimated number of property crimes increased by 5.2 percent in the West.
  • The estimated number of burglaries decreased in the Northeast, the Midwest, and in the South. However, in the West, the number of estimated burglaries increased 4.8 percent.
  • Larceny-thefts declined in three regions, with a 1.8 percent decrease in the South, 0.8 percent in the Northeast, and 0.5 percent in the Midwest. The number of estimated larceny-theft offenses increased 4.5 percent in the West. 
  • When compared with the 2011 estimates, the estimated number of motor vehicle thefts in 2012 increased 10.3 percent in the West. Motor vehicle thefts declined 8.5 percent in the Northeast, 3.6 percent in the South, and 3.2 percent in the Midwest.
